Pre-Christmas speculation about the E-Reader releases, particularly the Amazon Kindle, resulted in much mourning of the death of the bricks-and-mortar bookshop (who itself proclaimed that reports of its death were….well…you know…!) An optimist’s voice in the clamour here.

No doubt in any case but the rise of the Digital Book is truly to hand. With it, there seems an increasing focus on artistic interpretations of the codex as matter. These images are curious, the text is a body that is inscribed upon. The words that comprise the text’s content are rendered extraneous to the legibility of the codex as a conveyor of meaning. This seems to prompt the yet-reverberating question as to what exactly we mean by ‘text’?

More of Salazar’s work here.

His codex-inscriptions seem fitting New Year’s Greetings anyhow.
